Kantha is one of Bengal’s most loved embroidery traditions. It began as a way to layer old saris into quilts with simple running stitches, and grew into a rich art of flowers, birds, fish and village scenes stitched by hand.
Types of kantha work
- Nakshi kantha — dense, pictorial embroidery with motifs and stories.
- Lohori / wave kantha — running stitches that form ripples across the fabric.
- Par / border kantha — embroidery focused on the border and pallu.
How to judge a good kantha saree
- Stitches are small, even and close together.
- The fabric shows a slight natural ripple from the stitching — a sign of handwork.
- Heavier work on the pallu and border usually means more hours of craft.
Styling tips
Pair a busy kantha saree with a plain blouse, or flip it — wear a kantha-stitched blouse with a solid handloom saree. Oxidised jewellery and a small bindi complete the look.
Rajasthali Boutique in Berhampore stocks kantha stitch sarees and blouses, and our tailors can stitch your blouse to measure.
